Five hours and forty-five minutes ahead of UTC

Kathmandu uses Nepal Time (NPT), UTC+5:45, all year and without daylight saving. Offsets that end in a quarter of an hour are very rare: besides Nepal, only the Chatham Islands of New Zealand use one officially. In practice it means that Kathmandu is fifteen minutes ahead of Delhi, and that a time converted from London or New York never lands on the hour: noon in London in winter is 17:45 in Kathmandu.

A time zone measured from a Himalayan peak

Nepal’s meridian is 86 degrees 15 minutes east. It passes through Gaurishankar, a 7,134-metre mountain about 100 kilometres east of Kathmandu, and divided by fifteen degrees per hour it gives exactly five hours and forty-five minutes. The country adopted this standard in 1986. The quarter hour keeps Nepal’s clock close to its own sun and also marks a small but deliberate distance from Indian time.

A different year and a different weekend

Nepal’s official calendar is the Bikram Sambat, which runs about 56 years and eight months ahead of the Gregorian calendar. Its new year falls in mid-April, and the year 2083 begins in April 2026. Government offices, newspapers and school terms follow it. The week is different too: Saturday is the only weekly day of rest, and Sunday is an ordinary working day, which narrows the overlap with offices in Europe and America.
