Closer on the clock to Singapore than to Sydney

Perth uses Australian Western Standard Time (AWST), eight hours ahead of UTC, all year. That is the same time as Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing and Manila, so Western Australia shares a full working day with East Asia. The rest of Australia is further away: Sydney and Melbourne are two hours ahead in winter and three hours ahead in summer, and Adelaide an hour and a half or two and a half hours ahead.

Four referendums, four refusals

Western Australians have voted on daylight saving four times, in 1975, 1984, 1992 and 2009, each time after a trial period, and each time they have said no. The most recent trial ran for three summers from December 2006 to March 2009. Opposition is strongest in the rural and northern parts of the state, where the heat makes a later sunset unwelcome. Perth has kept standard time ever since.

Forty-five minutes on the Eyre Highway

Drive east from Perth towards Adelaide and, shortly before the state border, road signs ask you to move your watch forward by 45 minutes. A handful of roadhouses around Eucla and Cocklebiddy keep an unofficial Central Western Time, UTC+8:45, halfway between the clocks of the two states. It has no legal standing, yet it appears in phone software. London, by contrast, is a simple eight hours behind Perth in winter and seven in summer.
