Singapore uses Singapore Standard Time (SGT), eight hours ahead of UTC, with no daylight saving time. The same offset is used in Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Beijing, Manila, Taipei and Perth, which makes UTC+8 the most heavily populated time zone in the world and lets offices across East Asia share a full working day. Bangkok and Jakarta are one hour behind; Tokyo and Seoul are one hour ahead.
At 103.8 degrees east, Singapore lies in the natural band of UTC+7. It kept UTC+7:30 until the end of 1981. On 1 January 1982 it moved half an hour forward, following Malaysia, which had decided to put its peninsula on the same time as its states on Borneo. The result is a late sun: it rises and sets at about 07:00 and 19:00 all year, and solar noon falls just after 13:00.
Singapore’s clock has been reset six times. It adopted UTC+7 in 1905, added twenty minutes of daylight saving in 1933 and made UTC+7:30 its standard in 1941. During the Japanese occupation from 1942 to 1945 it ran on Tokyo time, UTC+9, before returning to UTC+7:30 and finally moving to UTC+8. Today London is eight hours behind in winter and seven in summer, and New York thirteen or twelve.
