Pacific Time, three hours behind New York

Los Angeles keeps Pacific Standard Time (PST, UTC−8) in winter and Pacific Daylight Time (PDT, UTC−7) in summer. San Francisco, Seattle and Las Vegas share the same clock, and because the whole country changes on the same nights, Los Angeles is three hours behind New York throughout the year. Honolulu, which never changes, is two hours behind Los Angeles in winter and three in summer.

A vote for permanent summer time that changed nothing yet

Clocks go forward on the second Sunday of March and back on the first Sunday of November. In 2018 about 60 per cent of California voters backed Proposition 7, which allows the state legislature to adopt year-round daylight time with a two-thirds vote. Year-round daylight time also needs the approval of the US Congress, and that has not been given, so Los Angeles continues to change its clocks twice a year.

Among the world’s major business centres, Los Angeles starts its day last. When it is 09:00 in Los Angeles it is noon in New York and 17:00 in London, and in Tokyo it is already 01:00 or 02:00 the next morning, depending on the season. Morning calls therefore reach Europe at the end of its day, while Asia is better reached in the late afternoon, which is the following morning there.
